Multi-Color Corporation Paarl walked away with gold awards at the 2022 FINAT (European label industry association) Label Competition, which took place on 1st June as well as the 2022 FSEA (Foil & Specialty Effects Association) Gold Leaf Awards Competition that was held on 14th June.

Gold for Robertson Winery’s Tete De Lion label at FINAT 2022

The competition attracted 205 entries from 38 companies in 21 countries worldwide. In addition to the 7 Group winners and the 34 Category winners a total of 73 Highly Commended certificates were distributed. The leading number of countries entering this year was led by Austria with 32 entries with Turkey close behind with 26 entries. The number of entries in each category was predictably led by Wines (46), Alcoholic Drinks (36), Sets of Labels (22) and Cosmetics (17).

MCC Label Paarl won joint first place in the “Printing Process: Combination Printing” category. Said Zoyon le Sueur, Technical Director at MCC Label Paarl, ‘The team at MCC Paarl is overjoyed to achieve this result in a technical category of an international competition. This high-end wine label features 5-colour lithographic offset print on an uncoated substrate, including a cunning duotone foil overprint that emphasises the emboss embellishments. Highlights are picked out in silkscreen varnish printed to the tight register requirements of the design. These print outcomes were developed over an iterative process with the designer and client, and we feel that we’ve really pushed back the boundaries of the possible with this project. We congratulate our sister company, MCC Australia, who also scooped up a joint win in the hotly contested Alcoholic Drinks category.’

Gold in Gold Leaf Awards for MCC Paarl

Entries were received from countries around the world, including the US, Canada, Denmark, Japan, Australia, South Africa, and Taiwan. Gold, Silver, and Bronze winners were honoured in 39 categories. The competition evaluates submissions that utilize a wide range of specialty finishing techniques, from foil stamping and embossing to specialty coating, film laminating, laser cutting, die-cutting and cold foil applications. Submissions come in a variety of formats, including greeting cards, folding cartons, labels, promotional pieces, calendars and more.

MCC Label Paarl was awarded gold in the Best Use of Foil/Embossing Label – Digitally Printed category. ‘Stellenbosch-based De Morgenzon Winery clearly needed a fitting label for their icon “The Divas” offering. Indeed, for a wine that retails over R1 500 per bottle, the packaging had to reflect the intrinsic value of the product. Yet again, De Morgenzon again turned to MCC Label Paarl to bring their vision to life. Over a chocolate-brown digitally printed background, detailed gold foil elements were applied, which were then embellished with sculptured embossing tools. The resulting three-dimensional relief feature brings a rich visual and tactile appeal to the cartouche and title, and strongly supports the value proposition of the brand. The label is supplied on a robust PET liner to ensure that label application proceeds smoothly despite the extreme embossing relief,’ Zoyon continued.

MCC Label Paarl is thrilled to have won in this category, which they believe convincingly demonstrates their leadership in high-end digital print solutions. The company is also gratified to see a good showing from their sister MCC Wine & Spirit sites who were also awarded in this competition:
