Litho

  1. Litho Sheetfed – Single Sheet

Encompasses all types of litho printed material folded no more than once or printed on a single side. This includes flyers, posters, inserts, leaflets, labels, invitations and packaging inserts etc.

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product.

  1. Litho Sheetfed – Annual Reports

Includes annual reports, integrated reports and sustainability reports – in fact, all legally-required reports.

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product.

  1. Litho Sheetfed – Magazines

Includes both perfect bound and saddle-stitched magazines, trade journals and corporate publications.

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product.

  1. Litho Sheetfed – Books

Thread-sewn, thread-sealed and square-back books, soft or hardcover.

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product.

  1. Litho Sheetfed – Brochures

Multiple sheet products including corporate brochures, product brochures, booklets and catalogues – folded and bound or unbound.

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product.

  1. Litho Sheetfed – Stationery

All manner of private, office and corporate stationery including business cards, folders, letterheads and compliment slips etc.

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product.

  1. Litho Sheetfed – Calendars

All types of calendars from single sheet to full multi-sheet calendars. This cannot include self-promotional calendars (see Self-promotion category).

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product.

  1. Litho Luxury Packaging

Litho Printing onto white paper or board specifically for the creation of packaging boxes, laminated or direct.

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product along with a sample of the finished product.

  1. Litho Packaging – Board

Litho Printing onto corrugated or flute board, grey back or similar, direct or laminated.

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product along with a sample of the finished product.

  1. Heatset Webfed – Magazines

Magazines printed on a heatset webfed press, whether perfect bound or saddle-stitched.

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product.

  1. Heatset Webfed – Brochures

This includes all manner of promotional materials whether unbound, bound, stitched or glued.

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product.

  1. Coldset Webfed

Encompasses all materials printed on a coldset webfed press whether as part of a newspaper, or an insert for inclusion with the newspaper or for other uses.

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product.

  1. Litho Continuous

Encompasses all materials printed on a continuous feed litho press – whether standard or hybrid – for the production of continuous stationery, direct mailers or labels, etc.

Entry requirements: Two full repeats including samples of finished and stripped products to show the end result.

Packaging / Flexo

  1. Labels – In-mould

Labels printed by any method for in-mould application. Includes in-mould printing and in-mould decorating.

Entry requirements: At least two samples and the finished product/container, as well as an explanation of the process. Printing of filmic only in the SADEC region.

  1. Metal Packaging

Metal packaging printed direct to the metal substrate for liquid packaging, aerosol cans and other forms of metal packaging using any process.

Entry requirements: At least two samples – only finished products will be accepted.

  1. Woven Sack (Direct/Flexo/Gravure)

Flexo printed directly or indirectly onto woven, smooth or laminated sack irrespective of technique. 

Entry Requirements: Both a flat sheet as well as made-up samples are required.

  1. Flexible Packaging – Film/Plastic or Foil

Packaging onto flexible substrates such as film/plastic or foil.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two samples of the printed as well as the finished product.

  1. Flexible Packaging – Shrink Sleeve

Packaging onto flexible substrates specifically for shrink wrapping.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two samples of the printed and finished product.

  1. Flexible Packaging – Pouch/Sachet

Flexographic printing for liquid and dry packaging onto substrates for make-up as sachets or pouches.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two samples of the printed product. A full sheet plus finished and assembled products.

  1. Liquid Packaging – Board

Flexographic printing for liquid packaging printing onto board.

Entry requirements: Two samples of the finished product.

  1. Flexo Printing – Labels Process - Colour only

Labels printed using flexography but NOT where the label will be applied as an in-mould process. Includes Paper/Plastic/PET/BOPP etc.

Entry requirements: A minimum of a full sheet but preferred to receive two or more full repeats in order to check consistency.

  1. Flexo Printing – Labels Process - Colour and embellishments (foiling, high build, spot varnishes etc.)

Labels printed using flexography but NOT where the label will be applied as an in-mould process. Includes Paper/Plastic/PET/BOPP etc.

Entry requirements: A minimum of a full sheet but preferred to receive two or more full repeats in order to check consistency.

  1. Flexo Printing – Labels Linework

Labels flexographic printed spot/solid colour or four colours and less but NOT where the label will be applied as an in-mould process. Can include embellishments.

Entry requirements: A minimum of a full sheet but preferred to receive two or more full repeats in order to check consistency. Required is one sample die-cut and one uncut.

  1. Flexo Printing – Corrugated/Flute (Laminated)

Flexographic printing onto paper/board and laminated onto corrugated or flute substrates (coated or uncoated).

Entry requirements: A minimum of two copies of the finished product.

  1. Flexo Printing – Corrugated/Flute (Direct Print)

Flexographic printing directly onto corrugated or flute substrates.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two copies of the finished product.

  1. Flexo Printing – Paper/Board Coated

All types of flexographic printing onto paper or board.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two copies of the printed product. In addition a finished product can be supplied at your discretion.

  1. Flexo Printing – Paper/Board Uncoated

All types of flexographic printing onto paper or board.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two copies of the printed product with a finished product.

  1. Flexo Printing – Paper Sack and Bag

Directly printed onto paper or bag using flexo printing.

Entry Requirements: Both a flat sheet as well as made-up samples.

Gravure

  1. Gravure Printing – Publication

Gravure printing of magazines, brochures and catalogues etc.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two copies of the printed product.

  1. Gravure Printing – Packaging

Gravure printing for packaging process.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two copies of the printed product with a finished product.

Large Format

This section has a requirement for a description or motivation and pictures of finished product.
Environmental sustainability/recyclability will be taken into consideration.

  1. Large format – Rigid Substrates

Conventional large format rigid materials printed on a flatbed printer.

Entry requirements: A reprint of the original work (or a minimum of 1m x 1m portion thereof) printed on the same substrate and using the same device. The print must be printed at 100% – reductions of the print will be disqualified. It must be finished in the same way as the original eg. cutting, drilling, die-cutting, laminating or CNC cutting etc. Flat products only like chromadek, aluminium composite sheet, engineered fibre-board, ABS or acrylic sheet etc.

  1. 3D POS

Printing onto a range of substrates for the manufacture of point-of-sale stands and displays.

Entry requirements: A reproduction of the original work printed at 100% on the same substrate and using the same device. Reductions of the print will be disqualified. It must be finished in the same way as the original eg. cutting, drilling, die-cutting, laminating, CNC cutting. Only finished products will be accepted.

  1. Large format – Paper substrates

Printing onto all manner of paper substrates – plain and textured – for a range of purposes including posters and paper banners. Excludes wallpapers (see Wallpaper category).

Entry requirements: A reproduction of the original work printed at 100% on the same substrate and using the same device to be finished in the same way as the original eg. cutting, drilling, die-cutting, laminating, CNC cutting. Only finished products are required. Reductions of the print will be disqualified.

  1. Large format – Wallpaper

Printing onto wallpapers both plain and textured.

Entry requirements: A reproduction of the original work printed at 100% on the same substrate and using the same device consisting of a minimum of two drops (where they join), as well as a printout of the creative printed at 20%. Plus photographs of the finished wall to demonstrate fit are required. Reductions of the two drops will be disqualified.

  1. Large-format – Interior Décor

Printed onto a range of substrates – rigid or flexible – including cushions, backdrops, blinds, frames, menus and 3D structures etc. Excludes wallpapers (see Wallpaper category).

Entry requirements: Two samples in full size will be required.

  1. Large format – Flexible Substrates

All types of PVC substrates including plastic banners, backlit plastics, flexible plastics and window films etc. This excludes billboards and vehicle branding (see Billboard and Vehicle Branding categories respectively).

Entry requirements: A reproduction of the original work (or a minimum of 1m x 1m portion thereof) printed at 100% on the same substrate and using the same device. If there was any finishing involved, sample should include finishing on at least two sides. Reductions of the print will be disqualified.

  1. Large format – Billboards

Large items designed to be viewed from a distance, which are printed in tiles or single sheets and then assembled/mounted. This is substrate independent and excludes XXL prints (see XXL category).

Entry requirements: A reprint of the original work (or a minimum of 2m x 2m portion thereof) printed at 100% on the same substrate and using the same device and print mode. Finishing such as welding, eyelets, pocketing and other elements must all be included in the provided sample. No self-adhesive vinyl - only PVC Scrim (Black Back PVC). The entry must also be accompanied by high-resolution photographs from a number of angles and distances. Close-ups are also required. Reductions of the print will be disqualified.

  1. Large format – Non-conventional Substrates

Incorporates printing onto flexible and rigid non-conventional substrates such as wood, glass, ceramics, acrylic, metal, mirrors, tableware, bubblewrap, vacuum forming and laptops etc.

Entry requirements: A reprint of the original work printed at 100% on the same substrate and using the same device. Reductions of the print will be disqualified.

  1. Large format – Vehicle Branding

Printing of vehicle signage, decals, graphics and full printed wraps etc. Non-conventional techniques are encouraged. This category excludes truck curtains (see XXL category).

Entry requirements: A reproduction of the original work (or a minimum of 1m x 1m portion thereof) printed at 100% on the same substrate and using the same device. The entry must also be accompanied by a minimum of 10 high-resolution photographs from a number of angles and distances, including all four sides of the vehicle as well as close-ups of the most intricate parts (vinyl joins, doors and headlight areas, parts that require technical expertise for application) are also required. Model of vehicle must be stipulated. Own company identification appearing on the prints will result in the entry being disqualified. Reductions of the print will be disqualified.

  1. Self-adhesive Vinyl Print and Cut

Printing of all manner of self-adhesive products with contour cut. Weeding will be judged.

Entry Requirements: 1 metre length required to show consistency. Leave the backing paper on the print as cutting will be judged.

  1. Large format – XXL Prints

Addresses very large printed items such as building wraps and truck curtains etc., which may need finishing in one way or another. Like items will be judged against each other. This is substrate independent.

Entry requirements: A reprint of the original work (or 2m x 2m portion thereof) printed at 100% on the same substrate and using the same device in the same mode, with actual finishing at scale eg. buckling or webbing on top section in the way it would be done on finished product. Also demonstrate in sample if any tiling was involved. The entry must also be accompanied by high-resolution photographs from a number of angles and distances. Close-ups are also required showing how the print is mounted to the vehicle or building etc. Reductions of the print will be disqualified.

  1. Large format – Soft Signage

Printing onto textiles, both dye-sublimation and direct-to-textile, for displays, lightboxes, printed apparel and backlit etc.

Entry requirements: A reproduction of the original work (or 1m x 1m portion thereof) printed at 100% on the same substrate and using the same device. A full finished product can be supplied. Photographs of the finished product must be supplied. Reductions of the print will be disqualified.

  1. Large format – Fine-art reproductions

Printing of fine-art or photographic reproductions onto standard materials such as canvas, fine-art papers or a range of alternate substrates including speciality substrates and non-conventional materials.

Entry requirements: A reprint of the original work printed at 100% on the same substrate and using the same device and in the same print mode. Reductions of the print will be disqualified.

  1. Non-printed Products

Signage, POS displays and other promotional materials including those produced using laser engraving and cutting, CNC cutting and engraving, channel lettering, neon signs, signwriting, etching and vacuum forming etc.

Entry requirements: Where possible one full-size sample to be supplied. Where not possible, the entry must be accompanied by high-resolution photographs from a number of angles and distances. Close-ups are also required. A letter explaining where the product is used and how it works is also required.

Digital Printing

  1. Digital Printing – Packaging Paper/Board

Printing onto corrugated or flute board, direct or laminated.

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product.

  1. Digital Printing – Packaging Film

Printing onto film or plastic for packaging applications.

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product.

  1. Digital Printing – Single Sheet

All types of digitally printed materials on a single sheet. This would include posters, inserts, invitations or cards. This is a substrate independent category.

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product.

  1. Digital Printing – Magazines

Magazines, whether perfect bound or saddle stitched, also includes trade journals and corporate publications.

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product.

  1. Digital Printing – Stationery

  1. Digital Printing - Hard Cover Books

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product.

  1. Digital Printing - Annual Reports

Includes digitally printed annual reports, integrated reports and sustainability reports – in fact , all legally-required reports.

Entry requirements: Two copies of the printed product.

  1. Digital Printing – Labels

Digitally printed labels whether self-adhesive, applied or shrink-wrapped, printed onto paper, plastic or foil. Excludes those intended for in-mould.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two samples of the printed label, however a full sheet of labels is preferred.

  1. Variable Data Printing

Print showing accurate use of variable data to personalise or customise the item.

Entry requirements: At least 10 discernibly different items to be entered, demonstrating the variable data aspects. A motivation must also explain the logistics behind the entire process as well as describing the variable fields.

Specialist

  1. Screen Printing

All types of screen printing produced using conventional silkscreen techniques. Excludes digitally printed materials.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two samples of the printed product.

  1. Embroidery

All types of produced work using conventional embroidery techniques.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two samples of the embroidered product, along with a laser playout from screen, specifications of the embroidery done, technical specs of the machine used and a sample of the artwork that was used.

  1. Promotional Goods

All types of corporate gifting and promotional goods produced, including debossing, pad printing, screen printing and dye sublimation.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two samples of the printed product.

  1. 3D Printing

Additive manufacturing or 3D printing including all types and techniques of 3D printed items such as filament printing or paper layering etc. Techniques include vat polymerisation, material extrusion, material jetting, binder jetting, powder bed fusion, direct energy deposition and sheet lamination.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two samples of the printed product. Also required is an explanation of the purpose of the product, whether as a product in its own right, a prototype for something that will be produced later or as a decorative item.

  1. Fusion of Techniques

Two or more printing techniques that are combined for the production of the job, such as litho and digital or digital and flexo as an example. Applicable to jobs where different techniques are used for separate elements or on a single element. A letter of motivation must explain the production methods used.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two samples of the printed product. Also required is an explanation of where the different techniques were used and why the combination was selected.

  1. Special Techniques and Finishes

Special finishes for the enhancement of the final appearance. Techniques such as foiling, embossing, varnishing, laminates and special binding etc. Finishes such as die-cutting, pop-ups, coatings, fragrance, invisible inks, thermography, beading or other such elements.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two samples of the printed product as well as an explanation of the processes followed.

  1. Folding and Finishing

All types of folding and finishing techniques with special focus on the technical requirements for a quality finish. Attention will be paid to detail such as back-to-back fit etc.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two samples of the printed product. An explanation of the processes followed.

  1. Self-promotion

Work done by any printer, other producer or service provider for their own promotional requirements, but which will be distributed or displayed to the general public.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two samples of the printed product.

  1. Innovation

Creative use of materials in the printing, packaging and signage sectors to design something that has not been seen before. Aimed at printers or service providers who exceed limitations or expectations on technically complex or difficult jobs.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two samples of the printed product. In addition to the samples of the printed work, a motivation to explain and describe the challenges, as well as how they were overcome.

  1. Sustainability

Aimed at companies who have demonstrated their commitment to sustainability through the introduction of innovation and/or their positive contribution to society and/or the environment. This could be through process, business or product innovation, sustainability practices related to, for example their printing process, programmes or projects supporting communities, customer service, or investing in shared value projects to develop other businesses.

Entry requirements: If it is a printed sample, then a minimum of two samples of the printed product. For all entries, a description of the commitment and how it has been delivered and what the results have been. A demonstration that this is not a once-off item but integrated into the daily operations of the company.

  1. Design For Print

This is the design-based aspect of the competition but with regards to how it pertains to the printed job. This incorporates any design that will be printed in the sectors of printing, packaging and signage. Design elements in the printing process such as extra colours, special techniques, special characteristics or general outstanding design techniques.

Entry requirements: A minimum of two samples of the product for use in print. Details of the final product and where/how it was used must be provided.
